The Black Forest is a large and beautiful mountain and forest area in southwestern Germany. The area is 6,009 square kilometers. The Black Forest was formerly dominated by beech and Norway spruce. Both species are very shady climax tree species, which meant the forest was very dense and dark, hence the name Black Forest.
