Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian‑American physical educator in Springfield, Massachusetts. He created the game as an indoor activity for winter training, using peach baskets and a soccer‑style ball. Naismith also wrote the original 13 rules. What began as a simple way to keep athletes active has since grown into a global sport played and followed by millions.
